Surveying critically a half-century of Lithuanian music scholarship, this essay sketches, for the first time, a sociological portrait of musicological study during the period of Soviet rule. It examines the institutionalization of the discipline, the ideological pressures placed upon Lithuanian musicologists by Soviet authorities, and strategies of resistance adopted by Lithuanian scholars, many of whom sought ways of preserving an awareness of their republic’s pre-Soviet history and national heritage through the medium of their scholarly work.
